The Buffalo News: Buffalo AKG Art Museum workers seek union vote

Jan 3, 2024

The Buffalo AKG Art Museum faces an organizing effort as employees seek to form a union, filing unfair labor practice charges against the museum.

AKG Workers United petitioned for an election to represent about 75 employees. Museum employees accused officials of stalling the process and hiring a law firm known for handling anti-union cases. Organizers claimed increased scrutiny and manipulation tactics from the museum since the campaign began, contradicting the museum's support for workers' rights. The museum's director denied exerting pressure and mentioned ongoing cooperation for an election process.

Following a substantial $200 million renovation, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum reopened to substantial acclaim, drawing large crowds. Employees, while expressing love for their jobs and a desire for the museum's newfound success, are advocating for a greater voice in their workplace.
